Another Day, Another Loonie

Up here in the land of the maple leaf, they have a one dollar coin. On one side of this bronze colored coin is a picture of a loon. So when the coin came into circulation people started calling it a "loonie". Then, they came out with a two dollar coin and so those Canadians, clever as they can be, started calling those "toonies". I would show you a picture of the loonie I had but when I went into town today to run errands, I spent my last loonie on a cup of coffee. So, no more loonie.

This is what I found this afternoon when I went into my bathroom. A bowl full of puppies sleeping in their food.

For those of you who haven't seen the puppy video, here it is:

As for today, it was the start of the work week. Cattle were moved, horse stalls were cleaned, puppies and dogs were fed. Much to do. I did get the opportunity to make a special trip into town to the SuperStore! Bought some milk because I was runnin low! 2 gallons cost me $16.80! I'll be getting a goat soon, don't you worry. Whenever we get to go to town (which I hear is a rare and special occasion around here) we always stop at the coffee place, Tim Horton's, for a hot fresh brew which warms the bones on these cold 2 and 3 degree C days! The rest of the day I stacked wood. Still have more to do. Should be finished by tomorrow!

As promised, here is a video tour of my living quarters!

A Day of Rest

The storm came alright. And my 3rd floor attic 'tiny house' has a leak around the chimney. I heard the water dripping on the floor and into the bucket all night.

It's a balmy -3C with the wind chill and there is some snow on the ground and more rain/sleet/snow coming down. The neighbor (Beth) who boards her mare here, was over this morning to bring one of the horses from the field into the barn during the storm. I got up and started the house fire and then went out to face the elements and open gates and electric fences to help bring the horse inside.

I came inside and puttered around the house doing a few chores inside while Kathryn fixed us breakfast. We had a delicious frittata with slices of apples fried in bacon fat on the side, and a cup of cider. We watched some American politics for our morning entertainment.

The rest of the day i'll spend finishing my room set up and writing a few letters home. I have to take advantage of the break in the work week and get as much done as possible. I'll probably upload some pictures of my room later this evening.

Woodstove/bread toaster and butter melter. Works great. Really top notch piece of machinery. Just getting dinner ready!

Dinner in the Realm! Milk, Coffee, Slow cooked rump roast from one of our steers, boiled potatoes avec fromage and my woodstove toast. Also, a bottle of some sort of garlic steak sauce that was given to me. Quite tasty.

After dinner it was time to do some afternoon work. The morning chores were all completed; Cattle were fed and moved to their fresh pasture for the day, horses were out in their paddocks and their stalls were mucked, puppies had fresh bedding and food, and the fire in the house was nice and warm.

My sniffling and poorly planned dialogue really add quite a nice element to the already poor cinematography and low production value of the overall video. I promise, they will get better with time.

I worked on stacking from 1 o'clock until supper time. About five and a half hours worth of stacking and there's still 2/3 left on the trailer.

Kathryn made supper. Free range chicken with kale, steamed carrots and cooked turnips. We had a good long evening chat by the fire. I was given the day off tomorrow to sleep in and spend some time chore free. There's a bad storm coming in tonight. A "nor-easter", as they say. We can expect heavy wind, rain, and snow. A good day to stay warm by the fire and drink some cider the neighbor lady brought over for me this afternoon.
